Technology of the Year for 2016 - The Web Platform We’re starting to see predictions about what’s going to be hot in enterprise technology in 2017.  Cloud (yet again), Blockchain, Big Data / Analytics, Internet of Things (IoT) are all among the top of the list. However, it was Krish Subrumanian’s humorous tweet that started me thinking about what will be the single most important contribution from the enterprise technology community in 2016. While all the aforementioned technologies will certainly see a lot of interest and growth, they’re all enabled by a Web platform. A platform is an architectural pattern and design that underlies all these capabilities. Its attributes are the ability to deliver a focused service and facilitate interaction through programmatic interfaces. The cloud platform delivers metered software and infrastructure services. Building a Winning DevOps Team | @DevOpsSummit #API #Agile #DevOps

Guest Post: Building a Winning DevOps Team By Adi Glasman DevOps, and Ops in general, is one of the most important components of a company’s production machine. Investing in building a winning DevOps team should be a priority for every company and will pay off quickly. As organizations and operations grow (products, features, number of customers, etc.), the scale of traffic, data, OS types and so on, increase rapidly. More products to support, new features to release and a lot more in-house cycles (e.g., QA, CI\CD, SME, SRE) need to be managed. A DevOps team’s first mission is to build, maintain and support the company’s technology stack. Whether it’s a PaaS, SaaS or IaaS environment, microservices or monolithic, Docker or K8S, it does not matter – DevOps engineers need to be able to support any environment the company chooses at any time and anywhere (On Premises, ... Fast Data, Fast Monitoring | @DevOpsSummit #Analytics #APM #Monitoring

Fast Data, Fast Monitoring By Christopher Tozzi Big data is old news. Today, the key to leveraging data effectively is to do fast data. In a similar fashion, traditional incident management-which entails collecting and analyzing large volumes of monitoring information-is no longer enough. Organizations must also now do "fast monitoring," which means not only collecting monitoring data; but making it actionable in real-time. This post examines what fast monitoring means, and explains how incident management teams can implement this approach to realize great benefits. Defining Fast Data To understand the concept of fast monitoring, you have to understand fast data - one of the newest innovations in the big data world. Very simply put, fast data is big data done in a fast way. Whereas big data traditionally meant storing large amounts of information and analyzing it lat... (more)

A New DNS for #IoT and #DevOps | @CloudExpo #AI #ML #RTC #DNS #M2M

Goodbye, Open Source: A New DNS for a New Internet BYOD. IoT. Cloud computing. DevOps. IT professionals today have more demands (and more acronyms) on their time than ever. Application development and delivery are changing rapidly and increasing in complexity, revealing the limitations of traditional DNS approaches in achieving modern network goals. The IT department has made use of open source platforms for decades to provide DNS and traffic management in their internal networks and for their public, internet-facing services. The majority of DNS servers, both on the internet and in enterprise intranets, are open source-based solutions such as BIND, djbdns, PowerDNS, gdnsd and NSD. It can feel like shoving a square peg into a round hole to try to adapt these solutions to perform the functions needed in today's environments. In addition, even with complex customizatio... (more)

Causation and Correlation in #Monitoring | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps #APM

Causation and Correlation: What Difference Does It Make? By Joseph Hoffman Causation and Correlation: What’s the difference? Why does it matter? Does it matter? Some vendors use time-based correlation to connect events across multiple observed data sets, and claim there’s a connection between two observed data sets. This type of approach is flawed and can lead to wildly inaccurate conclusions, which itself leads to wasted time by technical teams and high cost to the business. In the chart below we observe the Number of Requests and the Memory Utilization. Wow, the increase in the Number of Requests is causing memory utilized to go up. Quick, call Engineering and get them on this right away. We can easily see that there’s a correlation between the Number of requests and the memory size. Based on this data it would be relatively easy to conclude that the increase in R... (more)

DevOps is a hot topic. It seems that everyone is talking about it. Some have built business models around DevOps-related tools and themes. There are conferences and trade shows dedicated to DevOps-strategies and techniques. Some people have even made their careers around talking about it. In light of all of that, I find it chuckle-worthy that very few people actually know what DevOps is (just follow #devops on Twitter for proof.) I am not going to be one of many trying to create a buzzword-infested definition of DevOps to suit my particular agenda. Instead, I’d like to talk about what DevOps is not. So, without further ado, DevOps …
