As you know, enterprise IT conversation over the past year have often centered upon the open-source Kubernetes container orchestration system. In fact, Kubernetes has emerged as the key technology -- and even primary platform -- of cloud migrations for a wide variety of organizations.  Kubernetes is critical to forward-looking enterprises that continue to push their IT infrastructures toward maximum functionality, scalability, and flexibility.  As they do so, IT professionals are also embracing the reality of Serverless architectures, which are critical to developing and operating real-time applications and services. Serverless is particularly important as enterprises of all sizes develop and deploy Internet of Things (IoT) initiatives. Serverless and Kubernetes are great examples of continuous, rapid pace of change in enterprise IT. They also raise a number of critic... (more)

For Valentine's Day | @CloudExpo #DevOps #BigData #IoT #ML #Microservices

For Valentine's Day, here's a lighthearted look at the "relationship" between two complementary technologies: service virtualization and cloud dev/test labs. Dear Service Virtualization, Hey, I know it's been a while since we started being "a thing." When we met, everyone said you were just mocking, and that I wasn't real enough to make a living, with my head in the clouds. Yet, here we are, a few years later. Service Virtualization, you complete me. As a young Dev/Test Cloud, I always wanted to try new things. And what better use for Cloud than experimenting with software for startup companies? I was flexible, I thought I had the capacity to handle anything. I'd stay up all night studying or partying, but sometimes I'd crash. So what if some college kid's cloud-based photo-sharing site experiment goes down? It wasn't going to impact anyone's life. But when it came... (more)

[session] Enterprise #DigitalTransformation | @CloudExpo #AI #DX #FinTech #SmartCities

Digital Transformation and the Modern Enterprise Digital Transformation (DX) is not a "one-size-fits all" strategy. Each organization needs to develop its own unique, long-term DX plan. It must do so by realizing that we now live in a data-driven age, and that technologies such as Cloud Computing, Big Data, the IoT, Cognitive Computing, and Blockchain are only tools. In her general session at 21st Cloud Expo, Rebecca Wanta will explain how the strategy must focus on DX and include a commitment from top management to create great IT jobs, monitor progress, and never forget that their enterprise is in a day-to-day battle for survival. Speaker Bio Rebecca Wanta sits on the Board of Directors of Calgary Scientific. She has served as CIO and CTO for PepsiCo (where she won the Chairman's Award), Wells Fargo, Best Buy, and MGM Resorts. I’m Not Scared of DevOps | @KubeSUMMIT #DevOps #Serverless #APM #Docker #DataCenter #Monitoring #Kubernetes

DevOps is speeding towards the IT world like a freight train and the hype around it is deafening. There is no reason to be afraid of this change as it is the natural reaction to the agile movement that revolutionized development just a few years ago. By definition, DevOps is the natural alignment of IT performance to business profitability. The relevance of this has yet to be quantified but it has been suggested that the route to the CEO's chair will come from the IT leaders that successfully make the transition to a DevOps model. If this still seems foreign to you, I recommend reading up on DevOps Blog from IT Revolution, the OpsCode Blog, and check out The Phoenix Project. Despite all the talk around simple monitoring tools, breaking through the walls between Dev and Ops still poses a real challenge. This is because of a misunderstanding around Operations real pu... Exclusive 2004 Interview with Thomas Kurian | @KubeSUMMIT @GoogleCloud #CloudNative #DevOps #Serverless #Kubernetes

March 5, 2004 Two and a half years ago, when he stepped in to help Oracle get back into the application server business, Thomas Kurian had quite a tough row to hoe. Now he has 19,000 customers. JDJ explores with Kurian his 30-month journey, and asks too about other aspects of emerging technology seen from the Oracle perspective. In JDJ last month, Sun's Jonathan Schwartz claimed the "death" of middleware, so my first question to Thomas Kurian is inevitable, given his role as a champion of middleware for Oracle. What does he make of Schwartz's claim? "Those who say such things are being facetious," replies Kurian, bluntly. "A company that says that there is no role for middleware means it in the sense that it feels its own operating systems incorporate middleware facilities. Such a company is bundling proprietary middleware into the OS as a vehicle to try and lock c... (more)

Moving Fast with Microservices | @KubeSUMMIT #DevOps #CloudNative #Serverless #Docker #Kubernetes #Microservices

Download Slide Deck Here Moving Fast with Microservices: Building and Deploying Containerized Applications in a Cloud-Native World As software becomes more and more complex, we, as software developers, have been splitting up our code into smaller and smaller components. This is also true for the environment in which we run our code: going from bare metal, to VMs to the modern-day Cloud Native world of containers, schedulers and microservices. While we have figured out how to run containerized applications in the cloud using schedulers, we've yet to come up with a good solution to bridge the gap between getting your containers from your laptop to the cloud. Download Slide Deck Here How do we build software for containers? How do we ship containers? How do we do all of it without shooting ourselves in the foot? Skeuomorphism usually means retaining existing design cues in something new that doesn’t actually need them. However, the concept of skeuomorphism can be thought of as relating more broadly to applying existing patterns to new technologies that, in fact, cry out for new approaches. In his session at DevOps Summit, Gordon Haff, Senior Cloud Strategy Marketing and Evangelism Manager at Red Hat, discussed why containers should be paired with new architectural practices such as microservices rather than mimicking legacy server virtualization workflows and architectures.
