Canonical today announces Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will be released on 17th April 2014, bringing a new level of reliability, performance and interoperability to cloud and scale out environments with support and maintenance for five years.
“Ubuntu is the primary platform for cloud - public, private or hybrid. In this release, our third LTS with deep roots in cloud, we raise the bar for efficiency and orchestration at scale. That’s why businesses are adopting Ubuntu as they move to the cloud computing era,” says Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu and Canonical.
Global enterprises including AT&T, Bharti, Bouygues Telecom, British Telecom, China Telecom, China Unicom, Cogent Communications, Comcast, Deutsche Telekom, Korea Telecom, NEC, NTT, Numergy, Orange France, Time Warner Cable, Turk Telecom, Verizon and Yandex, as well as leading web scale services such as Netflix, Instagram, Hipchat and Quora are all building next generation services on Ubuntu.
"Time Warner Cable (TWC) is running Ubuntu OpenStack and partnering with Canonical as part of our strategy to improve infrastructure utilisation and accelerate service innovation, deployment, and delivery. We're looking forward to seeing the latest 14.04 LTS release,” says Matt Haines, VP at Time Warner Cable.
“Using Ubuntu OpenStack is enabling NEC to maximise margins on cloud services, minimise cloud deployment risks and speed up time to market. The arrival of 14.04 LTS supporting OpenStack Icehouse version promises a great release for continuing to reap benefits of cloud,” comments Shou Watanabe, Executive Specialist at NEC.
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS runs on all major public cloud services, creating a common platform that enables ISVs, SAAS providers and end users the freedom to choose the cloud provider that best meets their needs by service level, regulatory compliance or jurisdiction.
Canonical works with service providers including AWS, Azure, HP Cloud, Joyent, and IBM SoftLayer and SmartCloud to optimise Ubuntu and ensure a consistent, quality cloud experience. Choosing Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on those platforms enables users to deploy cloud applications securely, knowing they will be supported with patches and updates for many years.
Bryan Cantrill, SVP of Engineering at Joyent comments; "Ubuntu's 14.04 LTS release provides the latest deployment features and cloud tools. Ubuntu is already an optimised option for Joyent’s high performance infrastructure, and the latest release continues to provide a well-supported and efficient platform for mobile, big data and other cloud workloads."

When you set off to build an app that will change the world, designing your system architecture to be reliable and scalable is important but the stark reality is that, for your MVP, you probably had a “need for speed” (of development). You didn’t know what all the axes were to scale your application, where your stress points would be, and what weird and wonderful ways your customers would use it down the road. In a world of zero-downtime services, landing the plane to figure it out is not an option. In his session at DevOps Summit, Andrew Miklas, CTO of PagerDuty, will share lessons learned ...

Software development, like manufacturing, is a craft that requires the application of creative approaches to solve problems given a wide range of constraints. However, while engineering design may be craftwork, the production of most designed objects relies on a standardized and automated manufacturing process. By contrast, much of moving an application from prototype to production and, indeed, maintaining the application through its lifecycle has often remained craftwork. In his session at DevOps Summit, Gordon Haff, senior cloud strategy marketing and evangelism manager at Red Hat, will di...
