Top 3 Themes for Delivering Better Software Faster

SDLC Acceleration Summit Wrap-Up

Wayne Ariola Parasoft Service VirtualizationBy Wayne Ariola, Parasoft Chief Strategy Officer

It's a great time to be in the business of delivering software. Today, every business needs to leverage software to differentiate its products or services. So, like it or not, every business is in the software business.

This theme resonated at the SDLC Acceleration Summit that occurred May 13th in San Francisco. The sold-out event offered the real-world experiences of 18 industry leaders, from analysts to architects, who have been challenged to deliver better software faster.

A number of topics seemed to percolate frequently in the interactions among attendees and panelists:

  • How can established companies steer the ship to be more nimble? Faced with regulations, long-established processes, and perhaps more transaction-critical applications, how can larger companies promote change?
  • What are the best practices to overcome traditional process bottlenecks such as requirements validation or testing? How can organizations overcome the challenge of having inaccessible or incomplete test environments?

  • How can organizations leverage new disruptive technologies such as cloud, SaaS, service virtualization, or development testing to automate the SDLC?

Be sure to check the event website periodically for updates and event videos. The new SDLC Acceleration LinkedIn group will also serve as a forum for sharing resources and continuing the conversation. Next week, we'll be publishing the results from the real-time "SDLC Pulse" surveys, where attendees shared their opinions about the current state of the SDLC and what's needed to reach the next level.

[PRESS COVERAGE] SDLC Acceleration Highlights Service Virtualization

Alex Handy reports that at the SDLC Acceleration Summit, all the layers of the software development life cycle were examined in a search for a way to speed up the process. The article begins by quoting from the keynote, delivered by voke's Theresa Lanowitz:

“One of the things we believe is that you have to have parity between development, Q/A, operations and the business interests, so that they are all tied to the line of business,” she said. “Q/A is there for really understanding risk, so the line of business can make that call on an acceptable level of risk for software. The business side has to be responsible for the profit and loss because the software is your business. The more line-of-business participation, the better...”

[PRESS COVERAGE] Zeichick’s Take: Coping with Complexity

Alan Zeichick writes,  "Writing software would be oh, so much simpler if we didn’t have all those darned choices. HTML5 or native apps? Windows Server in the data center or Windows Azure in the cloud? Which Linux distro? Java or C#? Continuous Integration? Continuous Delivery? Git or Subversion or both? NoSQL? Which APIs? Node.js? Follow-the-sun?

In a SDLC Acceleration Summit panel discussion on real-world software delivery bottlenecks, “complexity” was suggested as a main challenge. The panel pointed out that the complexity of constantly evaluating new technologies, techniques and choices can bring uncertainty and doubt and consume valuable mental bandwidth—and those might sometimes negate the benefits of staying on the cutting edge…"

"We host and fully manage cloud data services, whether we store, the data, move the data, or run analytics on the data," stated Kamal Shannak, Senior Development Manager, Cloud Data Services, IBM, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 18th Cloud Expo, held June 7-9, 2016, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY.
In today's uber-connected, consumer-centric, cloud-enabled, insights-driven, multi-device, global world, the focus of solutions has shifted from the product that is sold to the person who is buying the product or service. Enterprises have rebranded their business around the consumers of their products. The buyer is the person and the focus is not on the offering. The person is connected through multiple devices, wearables, at home, on the road, and in multiple locations, sometimes simultaneously. Products have rebranded from content management, asset management, CRM, social media, analytics .....

Adding public cloud resources to an existing application can be a daunting process. The tools that you currently use to manage the software and hardware outside the cloud aren’t always the best tools to efficiently grow into the cloud. All of the major configuration management tools have cloud orchestration plugins that can be leveraged, but there are also cloud-native tools that can dramatically improve the efficiency of managing your application lifecycle. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Alex Lovell-Troy, Director of Solutions Engineering at Pythian, presented a roadmap that can be leve...

The cloud market growth today is largely in public clouds. While there is a lot of spend in IT departments in virtualization, these aren’t yet translating into a true “cloud” experience within the enterprise. What is stopping the growth of the “private cloud” market? In his general session at 18th Cloud Expo, Nara Rajagopalan, CEO of Accelerite, explored the challenges in deploying, managing, and getting adoption for a private cloud within an enterprise. What are the key differences between what is available in the public cloud and the early private clouds?
Deploying applications in hybrid cloud environments is hard work. Your team spends most of the time maintaining your infrastructure, configuring dev/test and production environments, and deploying applications across environments – which can be both time consuming and error prone. But what if you could automate provisioning and deployment to deliver error free environments faster? What could you do with your free time?

Keeping pace with advancements in software delivery processes and tooling is taxing even for the most proficient organizations. Point tools, platforms, open source and the increasing adoption of private and public cloud services requires strong engineering rigor – all in the face of developer demands to use the tools of choice. As Agile has settled in as a mainstream practice, now DevOps has emerged as the next wave to improve software delivery speed and output. To make DevOps work, organizations must focus on what is most relevant to deliver value, reduce IT complexity, create more repeatable...
