DevOps and Agile: As Tasty as Chocolate and Peanut Butter?

It’s easy to understand the confusion that is caused when the terms Agile and DevOps start getting tossed around. Buzzword bingo, here we come. But these two terms are more than just marketing speak – they’re technical movements born out of the desire to deliver better software, collaborate more effectively and bring a more robust end product to users.

There’s a direct connection between DevOps and Agile that goes beyond sharing key principles. We’ve riffed on this before in a blog post discussing how DevOps is a natural extension of Agile but after our 2014 & 2015 State of On-call data, it’s become even more obvious that this is the case.

73% of survey respondents reported they do agile development, while 76% report a year or more DevOps experience. The number of people saying they’re agile is up 13% over the numbers we saw in 2014. The majority of people in last year’s survey are doing both Agile and DevOps – it doesn’t have to be one or the other, nor should it be.

As Agile matures, interest in DevOps continues to grow. The search trends on Google are a great snapshot of exactly that.

Still confused about the similarities and differences between the two? The screenshots in the first part of this post are from a helpful video, explaining both concepts, that John Okoro created. If you’re interested in a deeper dive into these subjects, watch the entire thing below.

And if you’re looking for more information about how to get started with “the DevOps” or how VictorOps can help with that journey, check out our Knowledge Drop, which houses our many resources.

For far too long technology teams have lived in siloes. Not only physical siloes, but cultural siloes pushed by competing objectives. This includes informational siloes where business users require one set of data and tech teams require different data. DevOps intends to bridge these gaps to make tech driven operations more aligned and efficient.

Serveless Architectures brings the ability to independently scale, deploy and heal based on workloads and move away from monolithic designs. From the front-end, middle-ware and back-end layers, serverless workloads potentially have a larger security risk surface due to the many moving pieces. This talk will focus on key areas to consider for securing end to end, from dev to prod. We will discuss patterns for end to end TLS, session management, scaling to absorb attacks and mitigation techniques.
